NCC DAY!

Greeting guys!

Tomorrow is NCC day.

I wish to share with your the NCC day message of year 2006 from
Dr Arthur Beng, Chairman NCC Council.

This year marks a significant moment in the history of the National Cadet Corps as we embark on our 105th Anniversary celebrations. The NCC has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1901, with the setup of its very first boys’ unit. The NCC has grown from strength to strength into the dynamic and forward-looking youth organisation it is today by continually transforming itself and staying relevant amidst the changes in the broader national as well as educational landscape.
We are celebrating this landmark year with a renewed commitment towards serving the needs of our wider community. The NCC firmly believes in doing the best we can in contributing back to society. This year, we have partnered the Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (SCORE) in our support of the Yellow Ribbon Project. Through this collaboration, our cadets would gain greater awareness of the issues surrounding ex-offenders and help to bring this heightened awareness to every member of the school community. An estimated 1200 cadets have already successfully carried out an island-wide public donation drive during the June vacation to help raise funds for the Yellow Ribbon Project. Today, all NCC cadets across Singapore will also be collecting funds within their schools in support of the Yellow Ribbon Fund. I sincerely urge all of you to join hands with the NCC and lend your generous support to our efforts in helping ex-offenders reintegrate into our society.
The NCC is also well equipped to meet new challenges that have arisen from the changes in the educational landscape. We are currently making great headway in terms of our “Training and Curriculum Transformation” which we started last year. In the area of Sea Training, we have successfully trained a pool of certified instructors to conduct 1-star kayaking courses for our cadets. This has brought about a quantum leap in the quality of our sea training resource as well as the utilization of our training centres. We have thus increased the training capacity of our Sea Training Centres such that they are now open to both Air and Land cadets for kayaking. This has given the NCC a boost in our efforts towards tri-service integration.
Similarly, in the area of air training, we have improved our capabilities in aero-modelling tremendously. From just two qualified trainers in 2004, we have successfully expanded this pool of highly specialised and valuable in-house instructors to more than 30 this year. This cadre of trainers are proficient not only in training our cadets in Line and Radio Control Flying, but also in the captivating art of the Indoor Flying Object or IFO. The programme is now open to Land and Sea cadets who are interested in learning this challenging skill. Having participated in local competitions last year, our Air element is now ready to take on the world arena, with their sights set on international air competitions. We will keep up the rapid pace in the improvement of our programme and continue in our quest for greater heights.
We have also embarked on an Associate Membership Scheme whereby groups of non-NCC students would be given opportunities to participate in and benefit from selected NCC activities. This scheme aims to broaden the school CCA experience of these students and contribute towards providing them with a more holistic education. This is yet another effort of the NCC to reach out to serve the needs of our school community.
As we reflect on what we have achieved together over the past year, I am heartened that even as we continue to push the boundaries in terms of our training capacity and quality of our programmes, we have not rested on our laurels and forgotten about our wider community to which we belong. May I take this opportunity to congratulate all officers and cadets for your valuable contributions to our society such as through the support of the Yellow Ribbon Fund, and I wish you an enriching and fulfilling journey with the NCC.

Dr Arthur Beng, Chairman NCC Council

Please do not forget that there is training tomorrow after school too.It will begin at 3.30pm at the parade square and the attire is SMART 4.
